Residential Sector The residential sector, as defined by the Energy Information Administration, comprises all private residential buildings, including single-family homes, multifamily dwellings, and mobile homes. Common uses of energy associated with this sector include space heating, water heating, air conditioning, lighting, refrigeration, cooking, and running a variety of other appliances.
Commercial Sector The commercial sector includes office buildings, shopping malls, hospitals, churches, city halls, institutional living quarters, sewage treatment facilities, and many other types of buildings. The Energy Information Administration, the official source of energy statistics from the U.S. government, includes in this category any building that is not residential, agricultural, or industrial, even though some of these buildings might not traditionally be considered "commercial." A list of these building types can be found at: www.eia.doe.gov/emeu/consumptionbriefs/cbecs/pbawebsite/contents.htm

Vehicles whose primary purpose is not transportation (e.g., construction cranes and bulldozers, farming vehicles, and warehouse tractors and forklifts) are classified in the sector of their primary use.
Industrial Sector The industrial sector, as defined by the Energy Information Administration, comprises a wide range of activities, including agriculture, forestry, mining, public utility services, construction, and a variety of manufacturing industries. A listing of industries can be found at www.census.gov/epcd/www/naics.html. Overall energy use in this sector is largely for process heat and cooling and powering machinery, with lesser amounts used for facility heating, air conditioning, and lighting. Fossil fuels are also used as raw material inputs to manufactured products.
