Privacy Policy

The Energy Finder is a general audience website, hosted and managed by Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI), intended for users of all ages. Personal information of all users is collected, used and disclosed as described in this Privacy Policy.

Because we gather information about the users of the Community Energy Opportunity Finder website, we feel you should fully understand the terms and conditions surrounding the capture and use of that information. We suggest that everyone be informed and proactive about their privacy. There are several public interest and government websites available as sources of information. Search for and visit these sites to become better informed.

Information the Energy Finder Gathers and Tracks

The Energy Finder gathers personal information, such as your e-mail address, name, home or work address and telephone number as well as data on your community energy use, building characteristics, energy costs, emissions rates, and other energy opportunities.

The Energy Finder also collects certain information about your computer hardware and software. This information may include: your IP address, browser type, domain names, access times and referring website addresses. This information is used by Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) for the operation of the Energy Finder website, to maintain quality of the service, and to provide general statistics regarding use of the Energy Finder.

RMI does not share this information with any other third parties or display on the Energy Finder website under any circumstances, unless you have given your explicit permission.

If you have questions regarding this policy, you should contact RMI. See Contact Information below.

Surveys

Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) may occasionally conduct customer surveys to better target our content to our audience and get feedback from you about how to make our website better. RMI sometimes shares the aggregated demographic information in these surveys with our sponsors and potential sponsors. RMI never shares any information about specific individuals with any third party, except as noted previously.

Usage Tracking

The Energy Finder collects aggregated tracking information derived mainly by tallying page views throughout our websites. The overall usage statistics, according to a user's domain name, browser type and MIME type collected by reading this information from the browser string (information contained in every user's browser), are also broken down.

Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) tracks and catalogs the search terms that customers enter into our search tools, but this tracking is never associated with individual users.

RMI tracks search terms entered in our search function as one of many measures of what interests our users. But RMI des not track which terms a particular user enters.

RMI uses tracking information to determine which areas of our sites users like and don't like based on traffic to those areas. The Energy Finder does not track what individual users read, but rather how well each page performs overall. This helps RMI continue to build a better service for you.

Use of Information

Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) does not sell, rent or lease its user lists to third parties. RMI may, from time to time, if you give your permission, contact you to follow up on your community energy program. In those cases, your personal information (e-mail, name, address, telephone number) is never transferred to the third party.

If you give your permission, RMI may display some of your community's energy opportunities as a demonstration example for other users. You can indicate your permission or denial of permission in your user profile, and can change that at any time.

The Energy Finder uses any information voluntarily given by our users to enhance their experience in our network of sites, whether to provide interactive or personalized elements on the sites or to better prepare future content based on the interests of our users.

Security of Your Personal Information

Rocky Mountain Institute is committed to protecting the security of your personal information. We use a variety of security technologies and procedures to help protect your personal information from unauthorized access, use, or disclosure. For example, we store the personal information you provide on computer systems with limited access, which are located in controlled facilities.

Cookies

A "cookie" is a small data file that certain websites write to your hard drive when you visit them. A cookie file can contain information such as a user ID that the site uses to track the pages you've visited. The only personal information a cookie can contain is information you supply yourself. A cookie can't read data off your hard disk or read cookie files created by other sites. Cookies cannot be used to run programs or deliver viruses to your computer.

One of the primary purposes of cookies is to provide a convenience feature to save you time. For example, because the Energy Finder's pages are personalized for you, a cookie helps the Energy Finder to recall your specific information on subsequent visits. This simplifies the process of recording your personal information and energy opportunity analysis, so when you return to the Energy Finder, the information you previously provided can be easily retrieved.

You have the ability to accept or decline cookies. Most Internet browsers (ie: Apple Safari, Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox) automatically accept cookies, but you can usually modify your browser setting to decline cookies if you prefer. If you choose to decline cookies, you may not be able to fully experience the interactive features of the Energy Finder.

If there are material changes to this Policy or in how RMI will use your personal information, RMI will prominently post such changes prior to implementing the change.
