Community Program Can Help Citizens and Businesses Reduce Energy Use A community energy efficiency program can help its citizens and businesses reduce energy use in a number of ways, by for example:
- Offering financial incentives or rebates to customers;
- Educating citizens, businesspeople, and children about wise energy use;
- Offering technical advice, training, and other services related to energy efficiency, such as free energy audits;
- Serving as an information clearinghouse for general energy information, local sources for energy efficient equipment and services, and funding for citizens and businesses who want to implement energy efficient practices;
- Encouraging and coordinating partnerships between local businesses and builders that offer energy efficient equipment and services and customers who need those services;
- Developing and supporting energy efficiency codes and standards.
A number of different organizations throughout the United States can help with your community's energy efficiency program. These organizations can, for example:
- Provide monitoring and feedback on your energy efficiency program;
- Provide coordination services;
- Assist in marketing and advertising;
- Provide funding or information on funding options;
- Provide information about other energy efficiency programs.
We highly recommend you involve one or more of these organizations in your community energy efficiency program. Studies have shown that the community energy efficiency programs that have the most long-term success have all had a partner organization or organizations that can assist in funding, administering, and implementing their programs.
