The commercial sector, which comprises any building that is not residential, including those that are used for commercial, academic, and public purposes, consumes about 18 percent of the energy used in the United States each year, expending roughly $82 billion dollars in the process. By and large, energy is used very inefficiently in the commercial sector, and there is great opportunity for savings. RMI experts estimate that energy consumption can be cost-effectively reduced by 10 to 60 percent in the commercial sector, which amounts to an impressive $8 billion to $48 billion in energy savings every year (EIA, 1999).
